EICMA 2026: Honda has just previewed its first high-end e-mountain bike

Honda showcased lots of major projects at the Esposizione Internazionale Ciclo Motociclo e Accessori (EICMA) this year. Head-turners like the new V3R 900 E-Compressor, the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade, and the CRF1150L Africa Twin Series took center stage. Meanwhile, the brand also announced its new rider-assist system called Honda Sensing Ride as a testament to how much motorcycle-focused safety and convenience have evolved throughout the years.

Flying under the radar amidst the motorcycle previews and launches is the Honda RN0, the brand’s first high-end e-mountain bike. Developed in partnership with German bike manufacturer Rotwild, the RN0 rides on the concept of “New Terrain, Same Dream.”

The RN0 evolves from Honda’s RN01 downhill mountain bike, which won the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Mountain Bike Downhill World Cup in 2005. The new bike features a full-suspension setup with a carbon-fiber monocoque frame and gull-arm swingarm.

For pedal assistance, the RN0 uses a Shimano drive unit, which can deliver a maximum output of 100Nm of torque and 750W, supported by a 720Wh battery. The drive system features the Auto Assist function that adjusts the level of help from the motor depending on gradient and pedaling effort.

The 12-speed Shimano Deore XT Di2 drivetrain also has an optional Auto Shift function, which can automatically change gears to maintain optimal cadence. On the top tube, a 2.2-inch full-color display shows speed, range, assist-mode information, and other riding data. There’s also device charging through a USB-C port.

As for suspension, the RN0 uses a 160mm-travel Fox Float 36 Kashima fork and a 145mm-travel Fox Float X Kashima rear shock. Rims come courtesy of DT Swiss and give the rider a mullet setup with a 29er up front and a 27.5 in the back. The wheels are wrapped in Schwalbe Albert Evo tires, while stopping power comes from Shimano XT brakes. To round out the package, a Crankbrothers dropper post is installed for better mobility downhill.

The Honda RN0 will be available to consumers starting in 2027. How much, you ask? Honda hasn’t announced that yet. We’ll have to wait for the official launch to find out. In the meantime, what do you think of the RN0? Would you consider it if you were in the market for an e-mountain bike?
