This car enthusiast is making a Nissan Z T-top, and we want it

Nissan enthusiast, content creator, and car builder Nick Raymond Scherr (better known as Nismo Nick on Instagram) shared a draft of his next project: a Nissan Z T-top. Scherr said this project is part of his Open Air Collection, which will include a reimagined Murano CrossCabriolet and a Juke Convertible Concept.

Dubbed ‘Nissan’s number one fan,’ this isn’t Scherr’s first time building modern versions of older Nissan vehicles. Last year, he built a contemporary take on the Xterra, which he called ‘Project X,’ and showcased it at the 2025 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. The Z T-top project is a nod to the Z’s heritage, inspired by the iconic 300ZX and Datsun 280ZX.

Scherr says this project will be his interpretation of what a factory Nissan Z T-top could look like, adding that his recent Xterra project reflects the drive that enthusiasts have to build the cars that they wish existed into reality.

In an interview with Scherr, as reported by Carscoops.com, he shared some of the project’s engineering challenges, including making sure that the modified top is weatherproof and won’t create leaks inside the cabin when it rains.

“Because this is a true T-top design rather than a targa roof, the sealing requirements are significantly more complex,” said Scherr. “Some of the engineering challenges I am facing involve ensuring watertight sealing throughout the vehicle. Areas of particular concern include the windshield, side windows, rear section, and the interfaces where the T-top panels meet the center T-bar.”

The Nissan Z T-top project is a one-off custom build and is expected to be completed in 2027, along with the rest of Scherr’s Open Air Collection. We’re excited to see its final form.
