Happy ‘two weeks to GTA 6’ day, to all who celebrate. Developer Rockstar certainly does, because it’s just uploaded a huge new gallery of screenshots to mark the occasion.
Things to look out for in that gallery: Jason changing hairstyles more frequently than 2000s-era David Beckham. A scene from a rave that implies we’re in for some very impressive crowd rendering. Jason getting his knee down on a superbike in wet conditions while wearing jeans and a T-shirt, with no helmet. Face tattoos. Handguns. Frowns.

There’s some incredible facial detail to see in the close-up shots, which demonstrates the GTA 6 game engine’s capabilities. We don’t think it’s hyperbole to say that we may be about to enter a new era of hyper-realistic stubble, and that stubble in every other game is soon going to look hopelessly dated in its wake.

Just awoken from a decades-long slumber? GTA 6 is the upcoming open-world crime caper that’s pitched not just to be the biggest game of the year, but perhaps the biggest entertainment media event full stop. The games industry has experienced significant challenges over the last five years due to a depressingly varied range of factors: corporate buyouts and studio closures, private equity sucking studios dry and then closing them, disruption caused by COVID-19, a cost of living crisis, and AI.

A lot of people need GTA 6 to land. The games industry needs a moment. A planet-rattling smash hit that triggers renewed interest from investors and tells those investors that you make money in this business by making good games.
The quality of that stubble, then, along with every other minute detail in GTA 6, really does matter. Two weeks to go.
