The biggest perk of calling Kapitolyo home isn’t its central location—it’s that the neighborhood is home to some of the best coffee shops inside the Metro.
A great cafe is always just a short tricycle ride away. Emphasis on tricycle ride because, well, good luck finding decent parking nearby if you drove over here.

Type A Coffee, situated just a stone’s throw away from Kapitolyo along Pioneer Street, doesn’t have this problem. The establishment is inside the National Bookstore Park compound, which has a decent amount of nice-sized parking spaces for visiting customers.

More importantly, Type A offers arguably one of the best cold brews in the area, as we’ve discovered dropping by every weekend prior to or following car-centric errands like picking up the laundry or bulk grocery runs. My personal favorites are the Orange Cold Brew Spritz and Cold Brew Soda—perfect refreshers for the searing summer heat.

The cafe also offers dessert drinks items like the Cold Brew Milkshake and Cold Brew Gelato Affogato, as well as your usual long blacks, espressos, and other regular caffeinated fare. If you’re looking for a quick bite, there’s an assortment of both sweet and savory pastries like croissants, empanadas, and other snacks on offer, too.
Vibe-wise, you can’t ask for a better one. The interior is clean, minimal, and has a decent amount of space for customers to chill, seated and standing. There’s also outdoor seating, just in case you want to bring a furry friend or two along for your coffee run, as well as some bicycle racks at the front for those on two wheels instead of four.

It’s a very friendly environment, too. All the staff—from the cashier and baristas to the compound’s security guards—are warm and welcoming, and I don’t think we’ve dropped by where the owners weren’t present helping assist customers when the place gets busy.
Hours are 8am to 6pm all seven days of the week. If you’re passing by Pioneer Street or want to avoid the hassle of looking for parking inside Kapitolyo, Type A Coffee is definitely worth a visit.
