For as long as we can remember, Manila City has been rife with floods. Year in and year out, when the monsoon season begins, we’re all too familiar with how thoroughfares like Taft Avenue and España Boulevard can seemingly turn into gushing rivers overnight.
That’s something that the government is looking to (partially) address with its new project under the Department of Public Works and Highways: A water basin in Manila City.
Specifically, this water basin is located at Rajah Sulayman Park in Malate. To those familiar with the city’s layout but not with the said park, this is by the plaza between Malate Church and Roxas Boulevard.

The water basin is in close proximity to Manila Bay. The DPWH says the amount of water this can hold is equivalent to one and a half Olympic-sized swimming pools, which, in theory, should help mitigate some of the floods in the area. The agency says it is also in the process of upgrading its drainage systems and pumping stations to further help with the recurring floods plaguing the city.
