This BYD Dolphin is actually a light commercial vehicle in disguise

Things aren’t always what they appear to be. This Dolphin may look like your typical grocery-getting hatchback, but inside, it has the utilitarian attitude of a Lite Ace—albeit much smaller.

Meet the BYD Dolphin Cargo e-Van, a fully electric hatchback purposely built for hauling packages. The Dolphin Cargo e-Van—or ‘Dolphin Cargo’ for short—trades its rear seats for a solid bulkhead and a re-engineered rear floor.

BYD now has its eyes set on the light commercial vehicle segment, building upon the success of its passenger vehicles in recent years. The Dolphin Cargo will be sold in the UK, with its first appearance scheduled for the 2026 Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham, England.

The Commercial Vehicle Show is the UK’s premier event for road freight, transportation, distribution, and logistics. For 2026, the event focuses on driving decarbonization, digital transformation, and a shift to net zero. The Dolphin Cargo will be joined by commercial vehicles from Chery, Ford, Kia, and Isuzu, among other manufacturers.

The Dolphin Cargo has over 1,000 liters of storage space and 558km of range. You may think that doesn’t sound like a lot compared to traditional light commercial vehicles, and you’d be right, but perhaps this ‘light commercial hatchback’ is targeted for a specific use case in Europe—one that prioritizes urban mobility over heavy payloads. Maybe BYD can make a single-cab Shark with a troop carrier-style rear for bigger cargo in the future, who knows.

Full details of the BYD Dolphin Cargo e-Van are yet to be released, but if you’re based around Birmingham, you can check it at the Commercial Vehicle Show at the National Exhibition Centre from April 21 to April 23, 2026.
