The resurgence of the legacy Japanese brands in the compact SUV segment continues. Mazda Philippines has finally launched the new-generation CX-5

For this spec-sheet brawl, we’ve selected electrified models priced closest to Mazda’s new compact SUV, so we’ll be pitting it against the recently launched Nissan X-Trail e-Power, the all-new Toyota RAV4 HEV, and the updated Honda CR-V e:HEV. Let’s see how the new Mazda stacks up against the competition.

This batch of compact sports utility vehicles we assembled is a mix of different hybrid configurations, featuring front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive variants. The CX-5 and RAV4 have their internal combustion engines as their primary power source, while the X-Trail and CR-V use their powerful electric motors as their main power source. The Mazda produces 179hp with an extra 6hp boost from its integrated electric motor, the Nissan pumps out 201hp, the Toyota has a total system output of 236hp, and the Honda squeezes out a total system output of 204hp.

Despite the CX-5 being stretched out longer than its predecessor, the CR-V is still the longest of the bunch at 4,691mm; this is followed by the X-Trail at 4,690mm, the new CX-5 at 4,650mm, and the RAV4 at 4,600mm. While the Mazda is the second-shortest model overall, it has the longest wheelbase at 2,815mm; this is followed by the Nissan at 2,705mm, the Honda at 2,700mm, and the Toyota at 2,690mm.

When it comes to safety features, the CR-V has the most with eight airbags; this is followed by both the RAV4 and CX-5 with seven, while the X-Trail is equipped with six. All four compact SUVs come with a suite of advanced driver-assistance systems, but interestingly, the Nissan is the only one without adaptive cruise control. Instead, it makes do with standard cruise control.

All four compact SUVs feature power liftgates for convenience. The CX-5, X-Trail, and RAV4 come equipped with a panoramic sunroof.

The Mazda CX-5 AWD HEV Premium Plus carries a P2.495 million price tag, the Nissan X-Trail e-Power stickers in at P2.290 million, the Toyota RAV4 Limited HEV e-Four is priced at P2.549 million, and the Honda CR-V VX e:HEV costs P2.488 million. The latter has an AWD variant, but that one costs over P2.8 million.
