Should Honda make the Prelude Cabriolet a reality?

Posted on 08/03/2026 by in TopGear

After experiencing the Honda Prelude’s backseat and its limited headroom, 3D artist and virtual tuner Theottle decided to render the coupe with the second row entirely removed. Instead of a backseat,  the space behind the first row fits a convertible mechanism, turning the coupe into a cabriolet.

Theottle’s 3D model features the Prelude with a power-retractable soft-top modified from the MG Cyberster. The rear hatch door has been converted into a regular trunk lid, while the back of the passenger and driver’s seats now have silver roll hoops to protect virtual occupants in case of a rollover.

The artist points out that if the Prelude Carbiolet were to exist today, it would be the only front-wheel-drive cabriolet in the market. Honda has never made a convertible option for the Prelude, but some enthusiast-built custom projects exist using previous generations of the coupe.

That’s not all. In the same week, Theottle also created a shooting brake/wagon/hatchback render of the Prelude. This project solves the headroom issue without getting rid of the backseats, and features a side profile reminiscent of the fifth-generation Civic hatchback—especially with the shape of that rear quarter glass.
