There’s been a lot of development at the Quezon Memorial Circle in Quezon City, which will be one of the stops of the upcoming Metro Rail Transit Line 7 (MRT-7). Aside from its central location and status as an important landmark, it’s also one of the vast green spaces left in the metro, so the local government has been improving mobility and safety in the area for the benefit of locals, passing commuters, and visitors.
One of the ongoing projects in the park will help with flood control in the area, too. It’s a retention and detention pond, built in accordance with the local government’s Drainage Masterplan designed by the UP Resilience Institute.

Mayor Joy Belmonte of Quezon City posted an update on social media, explaining that as a retention pond, the structure can store up to 651 cubic meters of water—equivalent to 3,255 200-liter water drums—which will help reduce flooding in that part of the city.

“Ito’y mayroon ding detention pond na may Natural Filtration System na makakapag-imbak ng hanggang 282 cubic meters ng tubig o halos 1,410 water drums (200-liter drums) sa panahon ng tag-ulan,” Belmonte also wrote. “Ang maiipon namang tubig ay konektado sa mga tangke na maaaring nating magamit na pangdilig sa landscape ng ating lungsod.”
A similar structure called the Vertis North Rain Garden may be found in North EDSA. The ‘multipurpose park’ also serves as a detention pond, absorbing rainwater to prevent flooding.

Belmonte said the Quezon Memorial Center detention and retention pond, along with other local flood control projects, will be completed before the rainy season.
Elsewhere in the city, the upgrade to the drainage system along G. Araneta Avenue was completed in February. Late last year, the elevated promenade connecting Quezon Memorial Circle and the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center was also completed, providing safe access for pedestrians and cyclists between the two parks.
