The Mitsubishi Mirage G4 is a familiar friend to Filipino motorists. It’s been around since 2013 and has been assembled locally at the brand’s plant in Santa Rosa, Laguna, since 2016. For many, it also holds sentimental value as their family’s first car, or as the vehicle in which they learned to drive.
But there’s no denying that we’re firmly in the age of electrification. Hybrids especially have become easy picks for better fuel economy—a top consideration for buyers these days with fuel prices being so volatile. That might lead some people to count out the Mirage G4, but you’d actually be surprised how well it holds its own against electrified models.
While this subcompact sedan runs on gasoline, it certainly squeezes the most out of every drop of fuel. Testing over the years has shown that it consistently achieves fuel economy figures upwards of 20km/L—in other words, hybrid-level efficiency.
This is made possible thanks to its lightweight body and efficiency-biased engine tuning. Over the years, Mitsubishi has been able to really dial in the powertrain’s MIVEC variable valve timing system and continuously variable transmission to deliver the maximum range possible.
There‘s also something to be said about the Mirage G4’s low operating and maintenance costs. Its long-term presence in the market has made parts for it quite affordable, and because it’s a locally assembled model, parts availability is also not an issue.
Beyond being a fuel-economy segment leader, it’s also a very liveable vehicle. As a subcompact sedan, it’s an incredibly easy car to drive, especially in urban settings. Its dimensions also work to its advantage, allowing it to fit comfortably into parking spaces that might be too tight for bigger vehicles.
Despite its small footprint, Mirage G4 never actually feels short on space. Occupants are provided with plenty of leg- and headroom to make travel comfortable, and in the trunk, there’s 450 liters of cargo space. That’s a larger trunk than you’d find in some subcompact crossovers—this car will have no problem carrying your luggage, groceries, and whatever else you can think of throwing in the back.
So, how has the Mirage G4 managed to stick around in the market for going on 13 years now? It’s simple: Mitsubishi hit a winning formula by offering great fuel economy, easy driving dynamics, and plenty of space for both passengers and cargo. These are the exact things that Filipinos ask of their cars, which is why this sedan has continued to be the automaker’s bestseller over the years.
And while the electrification wave might be at an all-time high, that hasn’t changed what Filipinos look for in a car: efficiency, ease of use, and space. The formula just works. For that reason, the Mirage G4 will happily cruise along with hybrids today as “ol’ reliable” for the Philippine market.
