The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has just released its safety test results for the Tesla Model Y L. Those eyeing the six-seater as one of their options for their next vehicle will be glad to know it earned a five-star rating.

The rating was based on testing the closely related Model Y shown below. Tesla provided ANCAP with technical information showing that test results for the Model Y are also applicable to the Model Y L.

The Model Y L had almost identical results to its five-seater counterpart, scoring 91% on Adult Occupant Protection, 86% on Vulnerable Road-User Protection, and 92% on Safety Assist. The only category in which the Model Y L fell short of the Model Y was Child Occupant Protection, where it scored 84% compared to the Model Y’s 95%.

This is mainly due to difficulties in installing the child car seat. ANCAP advised to take care when selecting and installing child seats using the Isofix anchorages.

Adult Occupant Protection, on the other hand, was excellent with 36.52 out of 40 points achieved. The crash tests, which involved multiple angles and situations, including frontal offset impact, full-width frontal impact, side impact, whiplash protection, as well as rescue and extraction, yielded good results.

But the Model Y L’s strongest category was Safety Assist, scoring 16.65 out of 18 points. This is thanks to the SUV’s host of safety features, including automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and driver-monitoring features.

The Tesla Model Y L arrived in the Philippines in March, with 30 units recently handed over to new owners. The made-to-order six-seater SUV is priced at P2.849 million.
